An exhibition, celebrating the end of a 2-year project that provided opportunities for the community of Calstock to delve deep into their history and heritage, is being shown at the Tamar Valley Centre until the end of January.

Uncovering the Past will showcase and highlight the wealth of events and training that were made available to local people, thanks to a grant of £35,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), awarded to the Calstock Parish Heritage Project in October 2010.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to learn more about the community’s experience and the full stories behind what was uncovered during the project, including results from the 2011 Calstock Roman fort excavation.

Samantha Barnes, Project Officer for the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), says, “Calstock parish has a rich and deep history, and the project has allowed people to get involved and gain skills to help look after and interpret this heritage”.

Commenting on the project, HLF’s acting Head of South West, Richard Bellamy, said: “The Calstock Parish Heritage project is a marvellous example of how HLF funded projects provide opportunities for local people of all ages to get hands on (often literally!) with their heritage, enjoying the opportunity to contribute in a very practical way to what we know about the history of their area.”

The exhibition will provide the opportunity to join in with hands-on activities, chat to some of the volunteers, and find out how you can learn more about the heritage near you.

The Uncovering the Past exhibition continues until Thursday 31st January, at the Tamar Valley Centre, Drakewalls, near Gunnislake. The project team look forward to welcoming visitors between 11:00am and 4:00pm, Monday – Friday. The exhibition will also be open until 7:00pm on the 11th and 25th January, and 11:00am – 4:00pm on Saturday 26th.

This is just the start… the exhibition will tour throughout 2013. If you are interested in hosting all, or part, of the exhibition, the project team would love to hear from you.
