Title: Friends of Tamar Valley – Evening Talk
Location: Tamar Valley Centre, Drakewalls, nr Gunnislake
Description: Terry Faull will visit us again to talk about Holy Wells of Devon and Cornwall. For thousands of years, those seeking spiritual help, healing and their future, have gone to holy wells and springs to seek help and guidance. Cornwall and Devon is especially rich in these places and this talk will uncover the places and traditions which within living memory, were important to the culture of local people.
Tom Greeves will be joining us this evening to talk about the time when Tavistock Abbey was leased to existing churches and chapels on the Isles of Scilly in AD 1120. This talk explores the archaeological and historical evidence for Christianity on the islands before that date and during the 400-year involvement of the Abbey, which had a presence at the Priory of St Nicholas on the island of Tresco until about AD 1500, and which also managed the pilgrimage site of St Elidius on the island of St Helen’s.
