Valley Volunteers – Training Day – Small Tree Felling
12 February, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
From autumn to late winter we can safely fell trees without disturbing bird nesting. This may be to thin out growth where too many trees are growing poorly. Living broadleafed trees can also be safely coppiced or pollarded at this time, while their sap is dormant during the cold months. This session is to identify which trees can be felled and why, and then to practice various techniques involved in safe, directional felling using hand tools.
We will aim to:
- practice safe felling with hand tools
- practice winching stems,
- practice snedding(debranching) and crosscutting
- stacking timber and deal with brushwood
Lunch and other refreshments provided. Wear sturdy footwear, gloves and be prepared for the weather on the day.
