ABOUT THE

TAMAR VALLEY AONB

ABOUT

The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or TVAONB for short, is a special area around the rivers Tamar, Tavy and Lynher. The area is famous for its mining heritage landscape. A team of dedicated staff and volunteers run projects and coordinate work to protect the Valley.

On one side is Devon, the other Cornwall. The Tamar Valley extends north from the broad estuary at Plymouth to the intricate, deeply incised river that meanders just below Launceston and Tavistock. It borders Dartmoor National Park to the east and the Kit Hill area to the west.

The exceptional cultural significance of the Cornish mining landscape transcends international boundaries. The permanent protection of this countryside is important to people all over the world. This is why the area has been given World Heritage status.

‘World Heritage’ status gives recognition to ‘Cornish Mining’s’ excellence as a world class cultural heritage site and recognises the importance of ‘Cornish Mining’s’ historic landscapes, its outstanding mine buildings and other features, in addition to its important role in technological innovation and scientific research. How we Work

We’re a team that works in partnership to get great things done for the Tamar Valley area. The Tamar Valley AONB is a partnership of community organisations and key agencies. This helps the AONB to work in a way that delivers things which support the designation, the core needs of the area and that conserve the landscape beauty.

The AONB Partnership is made up of representatives from the local community, specialist organisations, government agencies, farmers and landowners. This group works together to produce a Management Plan for the AONB every 5 years which guides the work of the team.

By working together, the Tamar Valley AONB will be managed in a way that conserves and enhances its unique cultural identity and outstanding natural beauty for the benefit of all the people who live, work and visit the area, now and in the future.

CARING FOR TAMAR

The Tamar Valley AONB team exists to conserve & enhance the natural beauty & cultural heritage of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, ensuring it can meet the challenges of the future. But we can’t do it alone. Find out how you could become involved in keeping our Valley special.

Around 17,000 people live in the towns, villages and hamlets surrounding the Tamar Valley. The challenge is to evolve systems of working the land that will sustain farm families, supply good local food and other products and provide room for wildlife.

Our work is guided by the AONB Management Plan. This Plan looks at the many elements that make the area special and sets out how they’ll be looked after. You can see in more detail what we have been doing by reading our ‘Annual Reviews’ available here.

In 2008 we produced our first State of the AONB Report, a snapshot of the ‘health’ of the AONB landscape. This online Atlas is the result of that data collection exercise; the aim is to bring together maps and statistics that together paint a picture of the landscape. It also forms a valuable baseline for future monitoring work, enabling us to pick up trends in terms of the way that the landscape is being managed and the resilience of local communities. The report has been reviewed on a 5 yearly basis to coincide with the review of the Management Plan. The latest report was completed in 2019. View our latest Monitoring report here.
