Local Fruit Trees breathe life into Tamar Valley Farm

16th November 2007

The Tamar Valley is well known for its rich variety of local fruit trees and 182 local apple trees have just been planted in the Tamar Valley, in advance of National Tree Week.

The new orchard will be the start of an exciting new phase for the farm at Morwellham Quay which is owned by the Morwellham Trust.  The orchard will eventually produce juice and cider that can be sold to visitors to the Quay.  The orchard was planted in a day by the team that work for the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty plus other helpers.

Rosemary Teverson, Project Manager, explains why this activity took place; “This is the start of the new management of the farm land at Morwellham, and part of the vision that the farm could become an important local food hub and demonstration site”.

The National Trust’s Cotehele House has been instrumental in this project, grafting the local Tamar Valley varieties of fruit trees and providing the assistance of their Orchard Officer Chris Groves for help with planting.

National Tree Week, organised by the Tree Council takes place between 21st November and 3rd December. This began in 1975, and has seen over 20 million trees planted since.
