A useful extra link to the Discovery Trail is now open to walkers. Kit Hill is an iconic site for the Tamar Valley, its trademark chimney stack on the summit is visible from most parts of the area. Kit Hill is a country park run by Cornwall Council for the benefit of local people, but it is ‘landlocked’ by busy roads. Now it is possible to walk to Kit Hill, mostly off-road from Luckett, or walk off the Hill, via Luckett and along the Discovery Trail to Horsebridge or Gunnislake Bridge.
The AONB is very grateful to the private landowners who have graciously allowed the creation of new permissive paths. The route is varied in character and as it climbs offers the rewards of extensive views of the quiet country landscapes of the upper Tamar Valley. Climbing up the hill from Luckett Village the route crosses the upper levels of Luckett Mine before traversing Deer Park Farm with views over open farmland. Leaving the farm the walk crosses the ford at New Mill then follows the stream through Sheba Wood. Next there is a steady climb up an old bridle path from Old Mill, with rare open views through gateways and gaps in the hedges. The final section is along a quiet road in upper Downgate before crossing the road to the Kit Hill Incline Car Park.
Please take care on this route, some of the path surfaces are slippery, wet and rocky. Most of the on-road sections are on quiet country roads but watch for cars especially when walking in a large group.
Please shut all gates that you find closed and respect the privacy of landowners and their holiday tenants.
