Sculptural Boundaries at Cotehele

‘Love it’

‘Dislike it’

sculpture1These are just two of the comments made about the recent exhibition ’Sculptural Boundaries’ by designer and sculptor Sue Bryant. The site-specific contemporary sculptural garden screens are set within the historic Victorian garden and orchards of the National Trust’s Cotehele in St. Dominick, Saltash.

The work explores a variety of materials from sailcloth, recycled glass, perspex and metal, each piece demonstrates different making techniques and are designed to either impose upon its surroundings or fuse with.

Throughout the work the signature pattern of cut outs inspired by dappled light creates peepholes or pictures upon the panels.

The amalgamation of Sculpture and Garden Design is to demonstrate how these formssculpture2 can act as screens which can guide you through the space, create a sense of enclosure or boundary marker and act as stand-alone sculptures.

The exhibition continues until the 22nd of May 2013 opening times 11 – 5pm. So why not pay a visit to this beautiful estate and cast your eye and opinion on the exhibition.

Tackling Troublesome Plants in the Tamar Valley

Giant HogweedJoin a host of experts later this month to learn how to identify and treat the three main invasive plants within the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Ferry Farm, in Calstock, provides the venue for an afternoon of free advice, practical tips and demonstrations to help you control the spread of Giant Hogweed, Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed on your land.

Organisers of this free drop-in session are the Tamar Invasives Group, who have arranged for representatives from the Environment Agency, Natural England, Tamar Valley AONB and Cornwall Council to come along and share their knowledge.

Hugh Tyler, Natural England, explains; “As part of the Group’s ongoing commitment to ridding the Valley of these invasive plants, we have been visiting landowners along the River Tamar, looking at the current status of the plants on their land. We would now like to provide the landowners with the skills & confidence they need to identify and treat the plants themselves.”

Drop in at a time to suit you on Wednesday 22nd May, 12:30pm – 3:00pm. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.

Unlock the heritage of your community

CPHP pic

Communities throughout the Tamar Valley area will discover how to delve deep into their history & heritage this summer, thanks to a tour of the successful Uncovering the Past exhibition, that began in January this year.

The exhibition, celebrating the end of a 2-year project that provided opportunities for the community of Calstock to study their heritage, attracted over 350 visitors earlier this year during its time at the Tamar Valley Centre, near Gunnislake.

Uncovering the Past will now continue its journey, to showcase and highlight the wealth of events and training that were made available to local people, thanks to a grant of £35,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), awarded to the Calstock Parish Heritage Project in October 2010.

The next venue opening its doors is the Manor House Inn, Rilla Mill, from Tuesday 21st – Saturday 25th May. Visitors are welcome to drop in at any time between 11:30am – 3:00pm and 5:30pm – 9:00pm to learn more about Calstock community’s experience and the full stories behind what was uncovered during the project, including results from the 2011 Calstock Roman fort excavation.

Samantha Barnes, Project Officer for the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, will give a talk on the Project and answer any questions you may have at the Manor House Inn on Monday 20th May, 7:30pm. All are welcome.

Uncovering the Past is also on show in Calstock at the beginning of June – 1st June at the Village Hall, 2nd – 4th June at Calstock Arts, The Old Chapel. On Sunday 2nd June, tea & cakes will be available between 2pm and 5pm. Please call 01822 835030, email sbarnes@tamarvalley.org.uk (Sam Barnes, Tamar Valley AONB) or visit our Facebook page (TVAONB) nearer the time for full details of opening times.

If you are interested in hosting Uncovering the Past, to encourage your community to find out how to learn more about the heritage near you, we would love to hear from you. We can tailor the exhibition to suit the size of your setting.

NAAONB_Orfordness Lighthouse T.PICK 2011_Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONBLandscapes for Life – Conference 2013 with its theme of water was announced on World Water Day in March.

Management of water is one of the most important challenges that the global economy will face over the next decade. Landscapes for Life – Conference 2013 will bring delegates together in Ipswich to discuss the part that the UK’s Protected Landscape Family has in ensuring that our water systems are well managed and our environment is safeguarded for future generations.

Three days of presentations, discussion, networking and site visits will look at the links between water and natural beauty and set out the challenges and changes ahead. National issues will be addressed and the way Protected Landscape teams are working in partnership with local authorities, government bodies, landowners, utility providers, regulators and others to develop innovative solutions to manage our most precious resource will be shared.

Speakers which include Defra Minister, Richard Benyon MP, academics, water companies, the Environment Agency, Natural England, National Farmers Union and local partnerships will discuss and develop a vision for the future where Protected Landscapes play an important and integral role in the stewardship of our water.

Site visits to the iconic lowland landscape of Constable Country, the “fossilised” dune systems of the Norfolk and Suffolk Coasts, and the stunning waterways which make up the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads will highlight the work that local people are undertaking to help manage our water systems.

Philip Hygate, NAAONB Chairman said, “We are delighted to bring delegates to the East of England. We look forward to lively debate and discussion which will result in useful practical action throughout the UK’s Protected Landscapes. I am sure that delegates will leave the conference with the knowledge that the AONB Family is working hard to protect our most valuable resource which is why AONBs remain Landscapes for Life”.

*******************************

Organised by the National Association for AONBs (NAAONB) and local hosts Dedham Vale, Norfolk Coast and Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB Partnerships and the Broads Authority, this agenda-defining conference brings together the highest level delegates from around the UK and beyond whilst maintaining the open and intimate atmosphere of a family gathering.

The event takes place from 16-18th July 2013 and is split into three different formats – keynote sessions, themed breakout sessions and practical site visits. There will also be individual networking opportunities.
